Introduction
Mission Statement
Aligned with the overall mission statement of Miami University and objectives of the Miami 2020 Plan, the mission of the Miami University Middletown English Language Center is to provide program participants access to the highest quality English as a Second Language education possible in a safe and optimal learning environment to become proficient users in the global language of English. Members of the Miami University Middletown English Language Center strive to maximize available assets and their passion for global education to educate, engage, and prepare learners with the language, college, social, cultural, soft, and life skill sets to be successful in America’s higher-education system and become valuable contributing members in the University, local, and global communities and workforces.
Intensive English Program
The Miami University English Language Center (E.L.C.) Program provides intensive English language instruction to non-native speakers of English and is based on the Miami University Regional Campuses (Middletown and Hamilton).
The E.L.C. intensive English program has a total of five levels. The appropriate level of English study will be finalized during orientation week by taking a comprehensive assessment of the primary language skillsets upon arrival. Students will be assessed in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar. Level 1-3 students will begin non-credit intensive English courses.
In order to successfully complete E.L.C. coursework, students must earn a B- or above and receive teacher recommendations to continue to the next level the following semester. Upon enrollment in Level 4, students will be able to begin degree courses and will be conditionally admitted to Miami University Regional Campuses. Once Level 4 is successfully completed, students are fully admitted to Miami University and must complete ENG 108 and ENG 109 at the Regional Campuses as Level-5 students. After completion of ENG 109, all English requirements for international students are satisfied.
