It emerged at the same time as the consolidation of Spain as a modern State during the time of the Catholic King and Queen, Ferdinand and Isabella. GUADALAJARA Guadalajara is a lovely city and a very interesting place! As the capital of the state of Jalisco, this city was born to be great and magnificent! Located in Western Mexico, Guadalajara offers the exquisite splendor of a city that is traditional and modern at the same time. It has one of the best climates in the world, and it’s near the beautiful beaches of Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo and Melaque. THE UNIVERSIDAD AUTÓNOMA DE GUADALAJARA ( UAG ) This UAG, the oldest private university in Mexico, has strived for academic excellence for more than 75 years. Its name has become synonymous with educational prestige, a name well-known around the world. The UAG has especially achieved an important place in Latin American education. CENTRO INTERNACIONAL DE IDIOMAS AT THE UAG (CII ) The Centro Internacional de Idiomas was founded in order to help Mexican and international students develop the necessary linguistic skills to succeed and participate actively in the world today. Languages taught are: Spanish, English, French, Italian, German, Japanese, and Chinese. The prestige of the CII has continued to grow through the years, especially in Spanish. Study Options

A) INTENSIVE SPANISH COURSES Our program consists of nine levels: basic levels one through five, and advanced from six through nine. Courses are offered every four weeks. Each group has a maximum of 16 students. SPANISH CULTURE AND MEXICAN ANTHROPOLOGY The student is introduced to the historical background of Mexican society. Forty hours in which students are introduced to the historical background of Mexican society, as well as present day society including Indigenous communities through lectures, videos, and discussions. Students do research and present it to the class. B) Semester courses of semi-intensive advanced Spanish Semi-intensive advanced Spanish courses, during Spring and Fall semesters for a total of 160 contact hours (9 credits) two hours a day for sixteen weeks We also offer regular-semester courses for advanced students that have passed level 5. These courses offer the high quality of education offered by the UAG, along with the excellent opportunity to integrate with Mexican students. C) Spanish and Culture program For over twenty five years, the Office of International Programs at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara has served students from around the world in meeting their goals of pursuing academic development and improving their cultural understanding of Mexico. One of the most prestigious programs in the area of international education in Latin America has been the UAG Spanish and Culture Summer Program. In response to the increasing demand for this excellent academic and cultural experience, we now offer it year round, by request, given a minimum of ten participants. The main goal of this comprehensive program is to substantially raise the participants’ level of Spanish communication skills and provide a relevant opportunity for cultural immersion trough a combination of class work, lecture sessions, field trips and staying with a family. This particular program consists of 8 levels of Spanish language and several options related to the History and Culture of Mexico. The curriculum is designed by senior faculty members of the university’s international Language Center and the Humanities Institute. The programs high quality has been confirmed by the excellent evaluations received from former participants as well as its ten years of continuing success.


The summer program consists of three four-week sessions of intensive Spanish instruction 80 hours each. Participants complete one level per session. The course is four hours a day, five day a week. Culture The Summer session includes 32 hours of lectures plus field trips, assignments and reports. Spring and Fall have 45 contact hours plus other activities. The electives are:

  • Introduction to Mexican History
  • Mexican Folklore
  • Understanding the Social Issues of Mexico through literature*
  • International Business in Mexico

*All courses are taught in English except for the Literature course taught only in Spanish. Course credits and contact hours Spanish: Four semester credits/80 hours per session.

Optional three day trip to Mexico City This tour led by qualified faculty includes museums and important sites such as Templo Mayor, Teotihuacan, The National Museum of Anthropology and so forth. The number of participants is limited, so sign up and pay early. This program is usually offered during Summer but special arrangements can be made for the Spring and Fall Semester upon request.
