Architecture of London
Two thousand years of history- from small riverside settlement to urban metropolis- has imbued London with a unique and varied architectural landscape.
Using a series of case studies we will investigate the range of architectural styles found across London and how these reflect different periods in its expansion.
These case studies will be drawn from both well-known famous and lesser-known hidden landmarks. We will consider each buildings location, its purpose, who built/designed it, its architectural style and its place within wider social, political, religious, cultural and historical events of the time.
In the classroom, a wide range of plans, photographs, paintings and maps will be used to illustrate the above points. We will also visit London and look at one or several of the buildings previously discussed.
Recognition
At the end of the course, all students will receive a certificate of attendance. You can choose to complete the assessed exercises for the International Summer School. If you complete the assessments, you will receive a transcript from the University of Southampton worth 5 ECTS credits.
