This course combines a theoretical framework with a dominant practical component for the central theme of Neuroscience Applied to Consumption, thus allowing each student to identify the potential of behavioral analysis, psychophysiological and electrophysiological data, applied to the context of consumption or interaction with individuals of consumption. The course comes with a dynamic and innovative engine to be integrated into existing practices in companies, and combined with more traditional market studies, the course content will be complementary and will motivate structural changes in companies and partners. It aims to show participants the importance of applying neuroscience in the context of business strategy, product creation, pricing strategy, distribution and communication. With this course, trainees will change their state of mind regarding the strategic interventions to be applied in companies, they will understand the importance of identifying and reacting to stimuli, and then adapt and create products, campaigns, prices, websites or packaging capable of involving your customers.

The new field of behavioral science seeks to understand how humans think and act within their environments and how policies can shape that behavior. For example, research showing the power of default options on decision making has led to the introduction of “opt-out” policies for decisions like becoming an organ donor or contributing to one’s retirement account, leading to marked increases in participation (e.g., millions of newly eligible organ donors). Across many institutions – governmental, educational, and corporate – effective interventions rely on an understanding of human behavior. Behavioral science has been commonly applied to problems in marketing, health science, financial investing, charitable giving, human factors and environmental design, and education.

Wabash College’s neuroscience minor provides students with an introduction to the study of the nervous system from a range of levels. The nervous system is one of the major organ systems in the body and is critical to our identity. Discoveries in this field have great promise to illuminate the roots of our mental experience and provide the tools to preserve and reverse the effects of injury and disease. The study of neuroscience is fundamentally interdisciplinary and draws on techniques from diverse fields including biology, psychology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and philosophy. Computational neuroscience has a rich history going back to the original Hodgkin-Huxley model of the action potential and the work of Wilfrid Rall on cable theory and passive dendrites. More recently networks consisting of simple integrate-and-fire neurons have become popular. Nowadays standard simulator software exists to apply these modeling methods, which can then be used to interpret and predict experimental findings. This course introduces some standard modeling methods with an emphasis on simulation of single neurons and synapses and an introduction to integrate-and-fire networks. Each theoretical topic is linked to one or more seminal papers that will be discussed in class. A number of simple exercises using the NEURON simulator will demonstrate single neuron and synapse modeling.
