Introduction
The Associate in Arts in Global Studies for Transfer Degree is designed for students planning to transfer into several related majors such as Global Studies, Global Politics, International Relations, International Studies, and Comparative Government. Through interdisciplinary coursework, students will gain exposure to the global scope of contemporary and historical issues. Global Studies focus on topics such as geographical and cultural diversity, economic interdependence and inequality, global political institutions, international environmental challenges, and global citizenship.
Students pursuing the AA-T in Global Studies will study the development of global ideas, organizations, and actors; global interdependence at different points in human history; diverse practices in human civilization across time and space; and interdisciplinary research methods and modes of inquiry. Students who successfully complete the AA-T in Global Studies earn specific guarantees for transfer to the CSU system: admission to a CSU with junior status and priority admission to a CSU campus and to a program or major in Global Studies or a similar major. Students transferring to a CSU campus will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Students are required to complete 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to a California State University, including both of the following:
- (1) The Inter-segmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education Breadth Requirements and
- (2) 21–25 semester units with a grade of C or better in the major and an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in all CSU transferable coursework.
Program Outcome
Students who complete the program will be able to:
- Define concepts in global studies (e.g., globalization, interdependence, development, regional and cultural diversity, inequality, world problems, states, and international organizations).
- Identify, analyze, and discuss the global dimensions of various cultural, social, geographic, economic, and/or political issues, past and present.
- Demonstrate skills in the methods and theories used to study global topics.
