Introduction
City & Guilds of London Art School is proud to offer the UK’s only Historic Carving Postgraduate Diploma, specialising in either Stone Carving or Woodcarving. Our Postgraduate Diploma may be used to facilitate a change of career from another discipline or to extend the possibilities of a current practice as a sculptor, carver or mason.
The Postgraduate Diploma is a 2 year course, however if you have already completed one of our Diplomas in Historic Carving or an equivalent course, entry direct to the 2nd year may be possible.
The program of study is designed to reflect your individual experience and your aspirations, therefore elements of the Diploma courses are available on an optional basis. These include ornament study, figure modelling, portrait modelling, artistic anatomy and contextual studies such as geology, art and architectural history, professional practice and an introduction to current conservation practices and ethics.
The postgraduate course is intensive and involves extended research projects that complement your individual research interests and practical experience. The course is intended to be primarily self directed and to complement your individual research interests and practical experience. A planned and agreed program or statement of intent is necessary before enrolling on the course. This course is accredited by the City & Guilds Institute.

The Postgraduate Diploma is 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time, however if you have already completed one of our Diplomas in Historic Carving or an equivalent course, entry direct to the 2nd year may be possible based on an assessment of your portfolio.

You will be encouraged to undertake commissions where relevant whilst on the course and tutors can provide help and advice on these projects that will support you to develop your professional portfolio.
All the tutors are well-established professionals who work on some of the countrys most prestigious projects alongside teaching in the department. This ensures that the course is outward looking and highly vocational, while the tutors provide a network of professional contacts that frequently supports future employment. The Department has an unusually high ratio of staff to students, ensuring that each student has the regular contact and support that the learning of carving demands.
Entry Requirements
Applicants for Postgraduate Diploma Historic Carving should normally hold a degree level qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience.
Applicants who can demonstrate equivalent prior professional experience will be considered through a process called Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning (AP(E)L), which involves a judgment of various work-life and formal educational experiences against the selection criteria.
Applicants who do not speak English as a first language will be required to provide evidence of achieving the equivalent of the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) score of 6.0 or above, with a minimum of 5.0 in all four areas.
