Introduction
The Certificate in Cultural and Artistic Practices for Environmental and Social Justice (CAP) prepares students to collaborate with communities to make art of all forms, to express diverse identities, and to explore and take action on social and environmental issues.
The first of its kind in Canada, this certificate allows you to develop creative artistic skills, deepen your social analysis and learn to work collaboratively with community arts groups. You will gain real-world experience in placements with local cultural agencies and community organizations.
This certificate will teach you to use art as a tool for expressing diverse identities, for developing community awareness about environmental issues, and to take action for social change. You will take courses offered through the Faculties of Environmental & Urban Change and the School of the Arts, Performance, Media & Design to develop artistic skills while working collaboratively on a community-based cultural production in your final year of study.

Hands-on Learning and Field Studies
Learning in the field is a key component of our program. Your courses will take you on location with field trips to various places in Toronto, across Ontario, and in the workplace.
The Certificate in Cultural and Artistic Practice for Environment and Social Justice provides students with critical theory, creative skill building, and immersive hands-on learning. All courses will include experiential education opportunities in the classroom, community, and workplace. Students are required to complete Environmental Arts workshop courses and a work placement with a community organization for this program.
Program Curriculum
We recommend all students understand their degree requirements by referring to the official York University Academic Calendar for the year they started the program. Depending on which degree you are pursuing, requirements will be different. You are encouraged to meet with your Academic Advisor each year to ensure you are on track for graduation.
The Certificate in Cultural and Artistic Practices for Environmental and Social Justice (CAP) may be completed either as a direct entry or concurrently with a degree program at York University (a three-year degree or an Honours degree). Candidates who previously completed an undergraduate degree in a related field must have a minimum grade point average of 5.00 (C+). As well, individuals without an undergraduate degree who have previous relevant work experience may also apply to this program. Consideration of non-degree applicants will be based on the level and appropriateness of their work experience. Applicants may be invited to an interview by the program coordinator.
The certificate prepares students to collaborate with communities to make art of all forms, express diverse identities, explore and take action on social and environmental issues. Students develop cultural and artistic skills, deepen their social analysis, and learn to facilitate creative processes with groups working for social change.
The Faculty does not award certificates retroactively.
