Introduction

Inspired by the peace philosophies of Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, the founder of the Tokai University Educational System (TES), Hawaii Tokai International College (HTIC) strives to create and foster global citizens who embrace peace, democracy, and pluralism. The Peace Studies Certificate Program manifests the HTIC and TES missions to promote peace through internationally-oriented education. It seeks to bring together students who wish to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for conflict resolution, risk management, and peace-building.

The Peace Studies Certificate Program offers students the opportunity to study and promote peace in interpersonal, institutional, societal and/or global terms. The program benefits students who want to major in areas such as International Relations, Conflict Management, Risk Management, Social Work, Psychology, Education/Teaching, Development, and Justice.

Program Focus

In the Peace Studies Certificate Program, students explore sources of conflicts and various approaches to create “negative” and “positive” peace.

The program emphasizes broad, multidisciplinary areas/issues such as:

  • Cross-cultural Communication
  • Democracy and Pluralism
  • Environmental Protection and Biodiversity
  • Sustainable Resource Development

Certificates of Completion

Students who successfully complete the Peace Studies program will receive Certificates of Completion with their Associate in Arts diplomas.
