Introduction
Career prospects for Library Technicians who earn certificates are rising. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that library technicians' and assistants' employment is projected to grow 12 per cent from 2012 to 2022. This training can open the door to employment in a school media centre, a public library, an academic library, or a special library.
Students in this program will learn a series of key library functions, including collection management (selecting and acquiring materials), cataloguing basics for Dewey and Library of Congress, processing and repair of library materials, circulating and shelving materials, helping patrons with reference, resource sharing services, and managing a small library or media centre. Students will also acquire non-technical skills needed to be a successful library technician, such as customer service, listening, speaking, writing, attention to detail, and working as a team member.
Note: This program features two completion paths, each with different awards:
Students pursuing the AAS degree program in Library Technician must complete 60 credits of General Education requirements, core requirements, and approved electives.
Students pursuing the Certificate degree program in Library Technician must complete 30 credits of General Education requirements, core requirements, and approved electives.
