Introduction

Intensive English at UWF

The intensive English program of UWF is designed to prepare international students for successful study at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The talented teaching staff focuses on improving students’ ability to speak, listen, read, and write comprehensively in English. The program also focuses on the requirements for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which is required to study at many American universities.

The University offers five levels of instruction to meet the individual needs of every student, and the program is designed for students to be able to progress at their own pace and develop a better mastery of English each semester. In addition to classroom instruction, the IEP offers extracurricular activities to provide students with fun, informal opportunities to practice what they have learned and gain a better understanding of U.S. culture.

Program Overview

  • The Intensive English Program offers five levels of instruction, beginning through advanced.
  • Students are given an Entry English Placement Test (EPT) on the first day of class, and the results are used to determine students' level placements.
  • Students who are stronger in one skill than another may be placed in different levels for each skill.
  • Advancement to the next level of instruction is based on academic performance, meeting level completion requirements, attendance, instructor recommendations, and Exit EPT results.
  • During most semesters, full-time students usually take twenty hours (20) per week of classes in English, reading, writing, and grammar, in addition to listening and speaking.
  • Low teacher-to-student ratio with about 15 students per class.
