Introduction
The Associate in Arts (AA) degree is intended for students who want to transfer to a four-year university or college and major in liberal arts, public service, education, nursing, business, fine arts, communication, and social work. The Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) enables Wilkes Community College graduates of the Associate in Arts (AA) program who are admitted to any of the institutions of The University of North Carolina to transfer with junior status. Many private colleges honor the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA), almost identical to the CAA.
Wilkes Community College students who complete the AA degree will be considered to have satisfied the UNC Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) for admission in effect at the time of their graduation from high school. They will also be considered to have fulfilled the institution-wide, lower-division general education requirements of the receiving institution. The AA degree is structured to include Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC), General Education courses, and Pre-major/Elective courses. These courses prepare students for successful transfer into general education programs and selected majors at senior institutions. Courses should be selected based on students’ intended majors at specific transfer institutions.
