Why We Exist

Our Mission is to develop professionals who create social impact.

We build much-needed talent and capacity for organizations addressing social problems, enabling more effective work across the entire social sector.

We undertake our mission by creating new models of education and training that help people develop practical skills and experiences, understand their own leadership journey, and gain the global networks necessary for long-term career success and personal fulfillment.

Our ultimate goal is to see as many people as possible having fulfilling careers where they are making a positive impact in the world.

Our History

Amani Institute was founded in 2011 by Roshan Paul and Ilana Rabbat, from India and Argentina respectively, who had a combined 25 years experience in working in social entrepreneurship globally. Through their careers in vastly different parts of the world, they had witnessed first- hand

  1. the growing hunger for meaningful careers in the people they met
  2. the demand for high-quality talent from leading organizations all over the world, and
  3. the inadequacies of the higher education system (including their own top-ranked universities) to meet this two-way demand

Responding to the widely perceived gap between higher education and the employment marketplace, they set out to create Amani Institute – an institute of learning with a focus on preparing a new generation of leaders tackling the world’s toughest problems. Our name derives from the Swahili word for peace. The root word "aman" signifies peace or stability in every country in the arc from Morocco to Indonesia.

Amani Institute opened its doors in Nairobi (Kenya) in 2013, Sao Paulo (Brazil) in 2015 and Bengaluru (India) in 2017.

Our Values

Why not a University?

McKinsey argues persuasively that a big part of the [talent shortage] problem is that educators and employers operate in parallel universes—and that a big part of the solution lies in bringing these two universes together. The Economist | The Great Mismatch

By not aiming to become a university, we retain the ability to stay innovative with regard to our education model, as well as be closely aligned with the needs of employers. This is because what employers value in incoming employees isn’t provided adequately by universities, and vice-versa, what universities do well isn’t valued highly by employers. Though universities face a rising demand to provide more opportunities for experiential learning professional development, their orientation towards academic results means that they cannot supply what employers care most about. By partnering extensively with universities, we hope to support their transition towards the type of education that both their students and employers desire.

Our flagship program

375 Fellows from 52 countries have already graduated. The Social Innovation Management Program runs twice a year for 9 months: 5 months online and 4 months in Kenya, India or Brazil. All classes are held in English. Partial Scholarship available.
