Introduction

Hungry Creek offers you the opportunity to study and develop your creative abilities in a unique and stimulating environment.

The areas of study available are Painting, Jewellery, Ceramics, Sculpture, Drawing, Design, Art History and Computer-Aided Design for Jewellery.

Students come to Hungry Creek to become artists, craftspeople, designers, and teachers or to gain employment with associated industries. There is a strong emphasis on technical skills which are taught in the fully equipped jewelry, sculpture, painting and ceramics studios. Class sizes are limited to 15-20 students enabling individual attention from tutors. The school has been offering New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) approved qualifications since 1990 and now offers five NZQA approved qualifications. Students are entitled to the same loans and allowances as University and Polytechnic students. We welcome students of all ages and cultures as we believe everyone has something to offer.

Diploma in Jewellery

The curriculum is designed to expose students to a varied yet interrelated study program to give each student the skills to enter the industry either as a jewellery designer, manufacturing jeweller, and self employed studio jeweller or to go onto further study. [+]

Entry Criteria

We welcome students who are committed to making careers as jewellers. Maturity and life experience are considered an asset. Applicants are requested to attend an interview and bring with them examples of their art or craft work. Students who successfully complete the Certificate in Jewellery are accepted into year 2 of the Diploma in Jewellery.

Programme Overview

Technical & Practical Skills – Aimed at giving students practical skills in a range of techniques and materials used in jewellery making. It is based in the jewellery workshop where students will acquire skills enabling them to produce work showing high levels of technical expertise.... [-]

To give students the opportunity to refine and develop art-making, profession, research and presentation skills. During the year students are encouraged to market and exhibit their work. Year 2, 3 and honours students are each provided with a studio space in which to complete their work. [+]

Length

3 years full-time, 30 hours per week. Part-time study options are available.

Entry Criteria

Students who satisfactorily complete the Certificate in Art and Craft (Foundation) course are credited as having complete year one of the Diploma and accepted into year 2. All other applicants must submit a portfolio of work commensurate with the standard of the level at which they seek entry. The school recognises prior learning and encourages students with previous experience, work or study based, to apply at an advanced level.... [-]
