AMIDEAST is a leading American non-profit organization engaged in international education, training and development activities in the Middle East and North Africa. Founded in 1951, AMIDEAST in its early years focused on promoting U.S. study to students in the MENA region and managing U.S. scholarships and exchanges such as the flagship Fulbright Foreign Student Program. While these important programs continue apace, our work has expanded significantly. Today AMIDEAST programs and services touch the lives of half a million individuals a year – improving educational opportunities and quality, strengthening local institutions, and developing language and professional skills critical for success in the global economy.
- Building cross-cultural understanding
- Expanding educational opportunities
- Preparing individuals for jobs in the global economy
- Strengthening institutions and communities
- Empowering women and youth
Every year, AMIDEAST provides English language and professional skills training, educational advising, and testing services to hundreds of thousands of students and professionals in the Middle East and North Africa. We also support numerous institutional development projects in the region and administer some of the world's top educational exchange programs.
Where We Work
Headquartered in Washington, DC, the AMIDEAST NETWORK spans the Middle East and North Africa — a region of enormous diversity and rich cultural heritage. From Morocco to Oman and Iraq to Yemen, AMIDEAST operates more than 20 offices in 11 MENA countries and employs some 1,000 dedicated professionals. Individual country offices support country-specific portfolios of programs and services. However, each works every day to advance AMIDEAST’s fundamental mission of expanding opportunity through education while strengthening mutual understanding between Americans and the people of the Middle East and North Africa.
Empowering Youth and Women — the theme of our 2016 annual report—reflects the growing emphasis of our programming on these two key demographic groups. The rationale is simple: What happens today to improve the access of youth and women to education and training will determine the futures of their countries and the MENA region. Through our programs, we build professional and English language skills, enhance employability, expand access to U.S. higher education, improve schools, foster global perspectives, and facilitate engagement. The inspiring stories in the report will show you how youth and women benefit from these programs, and how AMIDEAST is meeting this most important challenge.
