West Virginia University - IEP

Introduction

Welcome

Founded in 1979, the Intensive English Program (IEP) at West Virginia University is a well-established program for international students needing to improve their English proficiency prior to entering an academic course of study. Our program is accredited by the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP) and the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP).

Students come to IEP to learn English and get used to life in the United States. While the process is not always easy, students learn many things about themselves and others that will help them succeed in life.

As an IEP student, you will receive help with all aspects of living in Morgantown, West Virginia. Services include assistance with housing, banking, academic and personal counseling, healthcare and legal matters. In addition, you will have access to most University facilities and entertainment.

In order to succeed, we ask you to put away your mother tongue and study as hard as you can. Keep your mind and your textbooks open. Your friends in the IEP office and teachers are here to help you in any way we can.

Academic Study

West Virginia University's Intensive English Program is designed to prepare students for a comprehensive understanding of the English language. Many students enter the IEP to gain the necessary language level to successfully complete an academic program at WVU, while others join to simply better their conversation abilities. With leveled curriculum, students of any ability can manage to achieve incredible improvements in their speaking, reading, and writing abilities.

Curriculum

Students at all five levels of the program (elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels) follow a core curriculum of Communication Skills, Reading, Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary and elective courses. In addition, students attend several elective courses, such as TOEFL Preparation, Business English, and American Culture.

ESL Credit Courses

In addition to the non-credit IEP courses, IEP teachers also teach the following ESL credit courses for students who are already admitted into the University.

  • ESL Academic Reading/Writing
  • ESL Research and Writing
  • Academic Speaking/Listening
  • ITA Fluency
  • Extra-Curricular Activities
  • Committee on English Accreditation (CEA)

In addition to learning English in the classroom, students are encouraged, to participate in extracurricular activities arranged by the activities coordinator in the IEP. In the fall and spring semesters, a Conversation Partner Program matches up IEP students with native speakers for one-on-one conversation, and for group conversation, students can attend the Conversation Table. In addition, there are regular outings to restaurants, shopping, and local attractions.
